Landing at Wuhan airport, I didn’t know what to expect from China. You can do your research, but nothing can prepare you to move overseas to a different country where most people don’t speak English.
Looking back 18 months later, it was the best time of my life. I made some fantastic friends, enjoyed teaching, and travelled to some incredible parts of a unique and beautiful country.
With its untouched landscapes, vast horizons and soulful characters, Mongolia is an overnight stop on one of the most famous train journeys in the world. Visiting in early November, as we did, brings travellers light snow, sunny days and freezing nights, and warm fire-heated Gers. During Summer, the land transforms into green hills, crystal clear lakes and dusty desert plains. The world’s largest land-locked country (that doesn’t border a closed sea) is also the most sparsely populated country, making its scenery even more beautiful and peaceful.
East Asia is full of culture, history, and stunning landscapes. From Mongolia’s endless grasslands to Japan’s cherry blossoms, there’s so much to see. In China, you can walk along the Great Wall, visit the Terracotta Army, or explore Suzhou’s peaceful gardens. Taiwan offers lively night markets and breathtaking mountain views. Mongolia’s wide-open steppes and nomadic traditions create a unique and unforgettable experience.
The cities in East Asia are just as exciting. Tokyo combines ancient temples with futuristic skyscrapers, while Seoul is a hub of street food, music, and history. Hong Kong shines with its towering skyline and busy harbor, while Macao mixes Portuguese influences with Chinese culture. Even in North Korea, Pyongyang offers grand architecture and a glimpse into a world few get to see. Each city has its own energy, but they all honor tradition in a special way.
East Asia is about more than its famous sights—it’s about the memories you make. Picture walking under cherry blossoms in Japan, sipping tea in a quiet village in Taiwan, or riding horseback across Mongolia’s plains. From South Korea’s bustling markets to Macao’s sparkling casinos, every moment feels like an adventure. The warmth of the people, the mix of old and new, and the beauty of the land make East Asia a place you’ll never forget.
